Groundhog Day The Musical is one of the newest musicals to hit Broadway in NYC, and today, they were nominated for 7 Tony Awards!
Groundhog Day the play is based off of the 1993 film starring Bill Murray, who's character relives the single day of Groundhog Day over and over (and over) again in the small town of Punxutawney. The movie was transformed into a play by the creators of Matilda, and before coming to the states, has had continued success in London's West End, which has included 2 Olivier Awards.
Today's Tony Award Nominations:
- Best Musical
- Best Actor: Andy Karl
- Best Director: Matthew Warchus
- Best Score: Tim Minchin
- Best Book: Ranny Rubin
- Best Scenic Design: Rob Howell
- Best Choreography: Peter Darling & Ellen Kane
As the New York Times stated on opening night, "A Star Is Born (and Born and Born) in 'Groundhog Day'". Andy Kary, who plays Murray's character, Phil Collins, delivers a fantastic performance. He is VERY deserving of this nomination, as well as everyone who is part of the Groundhog Day family!
I was fortunate enough to attend the Broadway opening night of Groundhog Day on April 17, 2017 and the after party at the beautiful Gotham Hall with my cousin Katy Rudd. She is a UK Associate Director working on the play, and is familiar with working on Tony-nominated plays. Broadway also led her to the Big Apple when she worked as the Associate Director for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, which won 5 out of 6 Tony Awards in 2015, including Best Play.
My recommendation does not just come from family allegiance. I believe Groundhog Day The Musical has rightfully earned the award nominations and will entertain you from beginning to end. The movie's transformation into a musical is brilliant.
